Around that time I was talking about this to a guy who had been a fine art and commercial photographer for decades and he suggested I get a Crown Graphic as a cheap way into large format, which turned out to be excellent advice. They are also simple to use yet capable of producing high quality photos. There are basically three designs of large format cameras — monorails, field and press. Press cameras were designed to be used by newspaper, wedding and general jobbing commercial photographers.
When not being used they fold up inside a box; pressing a button opens the front panel and allows the lens and bellows to be moved along the tracks for framing and focusing. This was fine with me as it was how I was planning to use the camera anyway. A dark cloth is useful for ground glass viewing, however the built-in pop-up viewing hood means that you can often frame and focus without one. The first is that it was designed to be used in landscape, horizontal format.

We are working on a film right now that takes place in and I am looking for S. Mendelsohn Speedgun flashes. I have one but I need about 8 more. There seem to be very difficult to find. Do you know of anybody who has them or where I could start looking. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. The only place I have found Mendelsohn flash units has been ebay. I do not check my messages here very often, so sorry if this is way out of date. I usually buy old camera gear through ebay, and so I think that would be the best place to sell. I would be happy to identify what you have – if it is in a Vulcanoid Handicase then it is probably a Speed Graphic. If so, the serial number is stamped into the wood under the top, at the handle-side of the camera, and I could date it with that.

The Pacemaker Speed Graphic was one of the longest produced large format cameras, produced from to twenty-three years. It came complete with several film holders and a flash. Later on, I found the original case for it at an auction.
The Crown Graphic models of this same period were similar in overall design to the Speed Graphics, but omitted their focal plane shutter, allowing Crown Graphic.

The camera is a 4×5 has a bed and a body like a Speed Graphic, but doesn’t have nor ever had a focal plane shutter. The lensboard is wood, but no lens.
