Around that time I was talking about this to a guy who had been a fine art and commercial photographer for decades and he suggested I get a Crown Graphic as a cheap way into large format, which turned out to be excellent advice. They are also simple to use yet capable of producing high quality photos. There are basically three designs of large format cameras — monorails, field and press. Press cameras were designed to be used by newspaper, wedding and general jobbing commercial photographers.

We are working on a film right now that takes place in and I am looking for S. Mendelsohn Speedgun flashes. I have one but I need about 8 more. There seem to be very difficult to find. I usually buy old camera gear through ebay, and so I think that would be the best place to sell. I would be happy to identify what you have – if it is in a Vulcanoid Handicase then it is probably a Speed Graphic. If so, the serial number is stamped into the wood under the top, at the handle-side of the camera, and I could date it with that.

The Pacemaker Speed Graphic was one of the longest produced large format cameras, produced from to twenty-three years. It came complete with several film holders and a flash. Later on, I found the original case for it at an auction.

The camera is a 4×5 has a bed and a body like a Speed Graphic, but doesn’t have nor ever had a focal plane shutter. The lensboard is wood, but no lens.
